09.03.10 Comprehension questions.

1. Refuse the idea "The readers is simply a receiver who plays a passive role in the written commmunication process." with as much contradictory evidence as possible from the chapter.
from this chapter, I could easily realize that 'the reader is acticely involved and often has to work to get th meaning out(p. 10)'. that is, the reader keeps going through the process of interpretation of what the writer is talking about. on top of that the reader knows that 'he or she has a clear purpose in reading'.
it can be a sort of conversation which requires interaction for each other. even though it is impossible for the writer to get direct feedback from the reader, the reader 'is willing to make some effor to get at the meaning'

2. Explain each term of "Reading Process"

Schema - a kind of mental structure. sometimes it is defined as backgroung knowledge, what we have experienced, how our minds have organized the knowledge we have got from our experiences.

Shared assumption - shared certain knowledge, experiences, attitudes, beliefs and so on between the writer and the reader

Presupposition -

Prediction -

3. Explain three different unconscious reading processes

Top-down - this skill with prior knowledge and common sense etc enables the reader to have a sense of perspectives and to predict the writer's purpose.

Bottom-up -

Interactive - a reader adopts a top down approach to predict the probable meaning and then moving to bottom up approach to check wheter that is really what the writer says.
