learning phonics

Many English teachers in Korea have their students spend much time practicing phonics (in case of young learners) and memorizing words. Explain the strengths and weaknesses of this instruction from the knowledge that you have built through this chapter.

strenghts -
1. Ss can read unknown words.
2. Ss can understand how to make sounds
3. it helps Ss understand how to spell words, it means Ss can write
4. it help Learners to recall -> to connect sounds and spelling

weakness -
1. Ss maymisuderstand that they know specific words and do not look up the dictionary
even though they do not know exactly about those.
2. Ss have a possiblity of different kinds of learning styles -> boring
3. there is no meaning only but forms only. -> not contextualized.
-> makes learners stressed

about Dr. Seuss

about Dr. Seuss

cons :
the first thing that crossed my head is lack of coherence. I have watched a number of video clips which help people understand basic knowledge about English in orderly fashions. Moreover this kind of characteristic has a possibility that causes confusion to students in EFL situations.

pros :
this video clip not only provides children with basic knowledge which is essential for them to understand E ,but offers them books(this can be found in the university library at a foreign literature section). and in the video clip, Dr. Seuss keeps repeating the key sentence which makes children attain certain grammatical patterns easily.

09.03.10 Comprehension questions.

1. Refuse the idea "The readers is simply a receiver who plays a passive role in the written commmunication process." with as much contradictory evidence as possible from the chapter.
from this chapter, I could easily realize that 'the reader is acticely involved and often has to work to get th meaning out(p. 10)'. that is, the reader keeps going through the process of interpretation of what the writer is talking about. on top of that the reader knows that 'he or she has a clear purpose in reading'.
it can be a sort of conversation which requires interaction for each other. even though it is impossible for the writer to get direct feedback from the reader, the reader 'is willing to make some effor to get at the meaning'

2. Explain each term of "Reading Process"

Schema - a kind of mental structure. sometimes it is defined as backgroung knowledge, what we have experienced, how our minds have organized the knowledge we have got from our experiences.

Shared assumption - shared certain knowledge, experiences, attitudes, beliefs and so on between the writer and the reader

Presupposition -

Prediction -

3. Explain three different unconscious reading processes

Top-down - this skill with prior knowledge and common sense etc enables the reader to have a sense of perspectives and to predict the writer's purpose.

Bottom-up -

Interactive - a reader adopts a top down approach to predict the probable meaning and then moving to bottom up approach to check wheter that is really what the writer says.
